Aquila Theatre breathes fresh life into one of Shakespeare’s most challenging comedies. Founded in London and now based in New York City, Aquila has won popular, critical, and academic acclaim worldwide, performing in places as diverse as Carnegie Hall, the Ancient Stadium at Delphi, and the White House. Education programs are an integral part of Aquila’s mission; their visit to Bellingham will also include acting workshops at local high schools and WWU.

Set in the idyllic town of Padua, The Taming of the Shrew tells the story of the timeless battle of the sexes. Lord Minola declares that his beautiful younger daughter, Bianca, cannot be courted until her older sister, Katherina, is wed. Katherina’s quick temper and acerbic wit frighten off potential suitors, who resort to hiring a newcomer to seduce and “tame” her. The story, with its domestic power plays and controversial depiction of marriage, has been adapted numerous times for stage, screen, opera, and musical theatre, perhaps the most famous being the film 10 Things I Hate About You and Cole Porter’s Tony-winning musical Kiss Me, Kate.

MBT Likes  Why We Like It: Shakespeare may be called the “Bard,” but we all know he’s the original “Dude.”
