Whatcom Symphony Orchestra Presents:

Harmony from Discord

Whatcom Symphony Orchestra 2015-16 Season Event

As part of its 40th season celebration, the WSO is excited to begin a multi-year initiative exploring uplifting works composed by artists in the face of severe oppression. The project seeks to highlight the ability of these composers to transcend the dark reality of their situation and celebrate the beauty of human life.

This first concert in the Harmony from Discord program showcases two works composed in the face of oppression. The first, László Weiner’s vibrant and compelling Triple Concerto, was written at the end of his life and never performed before his death in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Shostakovich’s epic Fifth Symphony, written in defiance of Stalin’s regime, completes this dynamic afternoon of music.

Weiner—Concerto for Flute, Viola, Piano, & String Orchestra

Shostakovich—Symphony No. 5
