Booker T. Jones

60 Years of Green Onions

Booker T. Jones is coming to MBT to celebrate 60-plus years of his iconic sound

Booker T. Jones is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and arguably the most famous Hammond B3 player in history. From an early age, Jones was captivated by the magic of melody, rhythm, and harmony. By the time he turned 16, Jones was already a working musician with a hit song, “Cause I Love You.” Best known as the frontman of the band Booker T. & the M.G. ‘s Jones has worked with countless award-winning artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. In 1992, Booker T. & the M.G. ‘s were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Booker T. & the M.G.s’ first recording, Green Onions, was an international sensation, selling more than one million copies and winning a place among Rolling Stone’s top 500 songs of all time. Now, Jones is bringing his quartet to MBT to celebrate 60-plus years of his iconic sound.

Since the album Green Onions, Jones has lent his trademark keyboard sound to help produce classic albums such as Willie Nelson’s multi-platinum hit Stardust and Bill Withers’ Just As I Am, which features the hit song “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Jones has also garnered success with his own work. Both Jones’ 2009 solo release Potato Hole and his 2011 solo release The Road From Memphis won Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Album.

In 2013, Jones released Sound The Alarm, marking a return to Stax Records after 40 years. In 2016, he debuted his live show “Booker T. Presents: A Stax Revue,” working with new talent to create a show that reflects the heart and soul of Stax Records. Most recently, Jones released his memoir, Time is Tight, and an accompanying album, Note by Note. He is currently working on a new recording project and touring worldwide with his solo band.
