Kenji Bunch | Supermaximum
Henriëtte Bosmans | Concert Piece for Violin-Orchestra
Gabriel Fauré | Requiem in D minor, Op. 48
This season’s Center Stage Harmony from Discord concert opens with Kenji Bunch’s Supermaximum. Inspired by the tradition of “chain gang” songs from prison camps of the Depression-era South, it integrates bluegrass, hip-hop, jazz, and funk idioms into more traditional structures. Henriëtte Bosmans’ Concert Piece for Violin-Orchestra follows. Written in 1934, the piece is heavy on Eastern modes with an improvisatory feel, while at the same time very dramatic. This concert closes with Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, a powerful piece in seven movements, scored for soprano and baritone soloists, mixed choir, orchestra, and organ.
