MBT Lookout Sessions Presents
May Erlewine
One of the Midwest’s most prolific and passionate songwriters, May Erlewine’s gift for songwriting leads to music that feels both fresh and soulfully familiar. Her emotionally resonant songs explore heartbreak, resilience, and empowerment, and have earned Erlewine a devoted following that reaches far beyond her Michigan roots.
Raised in a home steeped in art and music, Erlewine began writing songs at a very young age. As a teenager, she hitchhiked across the country, honing her craft and collecting stories that now shape her songwriting. Her lyrics reflect a deep connection and concern with everyday folk.
Erlewine uses her music as a platform for positive change. On stage, she champions environmental advocacy, social justice, creative empowerment, and community building while inviting her fans to join in the work together.
With her new album, What It Takes, Erlewine delivers powerful anthems of gritty resilience and fueled with fire. Although some consider it a departure from her previous work, Erlewine feels like it’s coming home. Produced by Theo Katzman and recorded in the Northwoods of Michigan, the album features a powerhouse lineup: Katzman on drums, Phil Cook on piano and keys, Packy Lundholm on guitar, and Joel Gottschalk on bass. Captured and mixed by Nick Nagurka, the record unleashes a bold new energy while staying grounded in Erlewine’s signature emotional depth.
Erlewine’s music has touched hearts around the world, offering solace, strength, and a light in the darkness. When May Erlewine sings, everyone is invited. Come as you are. These stories matter.
