MBT Wade Bennett King Education Series Presents

Romeo y Juliet

Welcome to Romeo y Juliet — a timeless story that continues to resonate with audiences, particularly young people, more than 400 years after it was first written. This adaptation aims to bring Shakespeare’s world into sharper focus for today’s middle and high school students, while weaving together modern Spanish and Shakespearean English with fluidity and poetic grace.

At the heart of Romeo y Juliet are themes of love, loss, and identity — topics that continue to shape the lives of teenagers everywhere. The intense emotions of first love, the struggles of defying societal expectations, and the tragic consequences of miscommunication all feel as fresh now as they did in Elizabethan times.

The production is designed to be fast-paced and accessible, distilling the play’s powerful essence into a form that fits within the constraints of a touring performance. With just five actors, Romeo y Juliet aims to capture the full spectrum of Shakespeare’s characters and the rich emotional depth of his writing, while maintaining a dynamic and engaging pace for student audiences. Each actor brings a piece of themselves in their Spanish text which has been specifically curated to their own dialects and identity.
